Victoria – Convention Day One

The warm sunny skies of Victoria greeted Delegates as they arrived from across the land to participate in the 17th Triennial Convention of the Union of National Defence Employees (UNDE). On Sunday the President hosted a Reception that featured scrumptious food and an opportunity for Sisters and Brothers to renew old friendships and forge new ones.

Monday it was down to business. Joan E Morris from the Sellemah Songhees First Nation opened with an Aboriginal blessing. The Guest Speaker, Irene Lanzinger, President BC Federation of Labour, inspired the floor by outlining the important issues facing Unions nowadays. UNDE President John MacLennan gave his farewell speech highlighting the recent 50th Anniversary celebrations that showcased the achievements of UNDE over the years. He thanked all Members for the support they had given him during his time in office. Right after lunch, the Order of the Day highlighted a talk by the ever-inspiring Hassan Yussuff, Canadian Labour Congress President.

The General Committee took over the floor first and identified five priority Resolutions. Four were passed with some discussion. The Finance Committee then presented a Budget that highlighted a slight surplus over the upcoming three years. Exciting times followed. Votes were close, the doors were tiled and Variable Expenditures were scrutinized line by line. By day’s end, the Budget was all ready for approval; however, many Financial Resolutions remained to be addressed.

The Convention recessed for the day. The Delegates headed off for some much needed rest.
